World AIDS Day 2009

Olin Health Center is helping to commemorate World AIDS Day Tuesday, December 1st. This special one-day observance is to help remind our community and the world that the AIDS pandemic is not over. With this day, we hope to increase knowledge about HIV/AIDS as well as remember those who are living with and have passed from this disease. Please join us in campus and community events that help acknowledge more than 500,000 Americans who have lost their battle with HIV/AIDS. Red ribbons will be tied around 250 trees on campus, symbolizing the number of deaths caused by HIV/AIDS in the U.S. to date.
*1 Ribbon = 2,000 deaths*

BET & Purpose Present: WORLD AIDS DAY/RAP IT UP Informational

World Aids Day is December 1, 2009 and we want all MSU students to come out and get educated about the importance of knowing your status. Join BET and Purpose Student Organization as we promote the BET "rap-it-up" campaign and discuss important Aids awareness issues plaguing the black youth community. There will be a documentary as well as FREE BET GIVEAWAYS for everyone that comes out and participates in the program.

"I am...: A program about HIV/AIDS"
Case Hall Black Caucus will be empowering the students of Michigan State with the information they need to protect themselves.
On November 30 we will be handing out ribbons at North and South Case lobbies at 5pm to alert everyone about the growing epidemic about HIV/AIDS.

Support LAAN by donating food to help stock their pantry. This food is given to those who have been infected and need some support. We will be holding a food drive for the Lansing Area AIDS Network from November 30 - December 4. Bins will be located at North and South Case front desk.

We are bringing you this program in an effort to educate and let you know what is really going on when it comes to this growing epidemic. We have the Black Poet Society, the State Department and a great couple who has personal experience with the virus. So come out and learn something that may change your life!!!!!

Getting Rid of Racism

Here is a video I found on racism from the perspective of well known recording artist, Lupe Fiasco.  I think that often, when we think of black leadership and those that really have an impact on our community we have the regulars: Barack Obama, Jessie Jackson, etc...  We tend to forget that those people although they may be the face of black politics, they are not directly affecting our youth.
Rappers are huge opinion leaders and influences in the black community these days and its great to see that some of them are looking at the bigger picture.

Student of the Week! ~Courtney Hurtt~

Junior
Comparative Cultures and Politics with a Specialization in Global Urban and Education Studies 



Courtney is currently a Student Leader in Multi-Racial Unity Living Experience (mrule), a student organization dedicated to social justice through promoting dialogue, service, and activism. 


She is also co-founder of Friends of VVOCF, which is an organization dedicated to supporting an MSU-partnered orphan care center in South Africa for those affected by the HIV-AIDS epidemic. 

After visiting the center last summer she has continued commitment to supporting vulnerable youth locally as well as internationally. She was awarded a 2009 Clinton Global Initiative Award for $5,000 in her efforts towards VVOCF. In addition, International Studies and Programs published a story about VVOCF's work. 

Her plan is go on to graduate school after Spring 2011, and continue working within the field global urban educational politics.

This SUNDAY Friends of VVOCF will be sponsoring the 3rd Annual Dodgeball Tournament in efforts to raise money for the center. If you are interested in gathering a team you can email her at hurttcou@msu.edu.
